Hi folks. forgive me if i post this in the wrong category but I would really like to have some input on some air filters. I have searched some threads and havent found the right one i guess. I have a 2000 model chevy 5.3 liter, and am going to put some kinda high performance air filter on it and just curious what you guys use and if it increased the mileage any.. thanks guys!

 

Before i got my Volant CAI, i was using a K&N filter in the stock box. After about 10k miles I started having problems with the MAF. You will hear that a lot with oiled filters. If i was going to just stick with the stock air box i would stay with a normal paper filter. I never noticed any gains at all with the K&N. If you want to go CAI, I have been happy with my Volant and no oil to worry about with the power core filter. HTH

 

I'm seriously thinking of purchasing the amsoil air filter... cause the amsoil oil sure is doing great in it!

 

Drop in air filters make ZERO difference. Cold air intakes make next to zero difference, and definitely not worth the $300 price tags. If you get a cold air intake, don't spend much more than $100 on one.

 

a study was just released that proved that no milage gains can be had by improved airfilter design, clean or dirty but rather only response improved. I thought that was interesting but it makes sense with the way that modern vehicles are fueled.

 

I'm running an Amsoil dry filter in my Volant CAI and I've been very happy with it. After years of using oiled filters and switching to the dry filter, I'll never use an oiled filter again personally. The maintenance on the dry filter is much easier. I'd go with the Amsoil drop in FWIW...as mentioned, I doubt that you'll notice any difference in power, but every little bit helps I suppose. Mod the bottom of the factory air box for added air flow or even make your own ram air. Guys who have modded their factory air intake see about the same gains as the higher priced CAI's (like I have lol). The Volant may not be worth many ponies, but it sure is purdy

If you want to measure performance gains by changing an air filter, you need to use a good scan/log software. HPTuners and EFILive are the minimum packages you need. An engine only has so much volume per cylinder and the engines of today are very efficient at getting that air/gas mixture into each cylinder. Unless you change an external factor such as supercharge, cam, heads, nitrous, etc the only way you can enrich the mixture is with colder more dense air. That is what all those test have shown. Change you filter often and keep the air intake clean and save your money. There are several different cold air intakes available (just changing the housing is not adding cold air) find one to your taste and get some results. HTH
