all depends on your goals...if you just want a little power and some noise I'd say grab you some oval ports, decent intake and cam and you outta be good. If you got the extra cash I'd sat throw some flat tops or domes in it too. I wouldn't worry about too big of a cam, big blocks don't need to be spun to high to make power. (and I wouldn't recommend it without a solid and pricey build)

What I loved about my old engine was the torque, talk about getting off the line!

I'm a firm believer that old school GM big block heads are a weak link. I would definitely go aftermarket aluminum heads, like AFR for example. For a cam you might want to check out the Comp Cams XE274H.

the heads on most of them were definitely weak...shortly after the 454 came out the horsepower game started dying out so most 454's you come across are low output engines with poor flowing heads and a little cam. there were actually three bbc port designs, oval, rectangle and peanut, which can make finding a good intake manifold a nuisance. my recommendation would be to get a set of aftermarket heads if you can afford them as that will free up a lot of power and then cam it to fit rpm range you want to work with. the cam batboy showed here would make a strong street motor with a solid pair of heads on top. a good set of headers and a nice dual plane intake manifold would round it out well IMO.

There are a lot of mid sized runner heads now that work very well for small displacement big blocks and a 454 is very small now lol. Look at a set of 502 heads, my machinist told me that they were Edelbrock Performer RPM oval port heads just with GM stamped in them. That's what I'm using on my 71 Camaro's big block. Just about any 280-310cc intake runner head will work good for a street car, going bigger kills the torque down low and smaller kills the power upstairs. For a big block, something in the 230's @ .050 makes a decent all around cam. I would look for 1 7/8's into 3 1/2" collector headers, good compromise for a street car or truck.

pics of said motor casting numbers off of block and heads? Big oval ports will support 700 hp, unless you are like everyone else and have a couple grand for aluminum heads and all that other dumbshit

find some old 781 oval port heads, those will support more than what you'd plan for it and not cost a ton of cash...can find a good set used for about $300-$400
