Default 4.8 Cam Question

I am really stuck on this one, Please Help...

I really want a cam in my 4.8 but don't know if the ones out of a 5.3 will work. Since the stroke is different between the two motors, i want to know if some of the street cams that my friends are running in there 5.3's will work in my 4.8. Trying to find out quick so i don't blow this money on my dam girlfriend...

Thanks

5.3 and 4.8 cams are 100% interchangable in the physical sense. Performnace is a differenet issue. What cam(s) are you considering?

Was looking at getting the zo6 cam for the price. Not really looking for big numbers but i want to be more competive on the street. I have a friends that tried the zo6 and said that they didn't see any difference.

I know the parts are interchangable but i want more performance without headers and gutting the cats off. I am about to do the free mods and go from there....

Thanks for the help

The Z06 cam is good for a light vehicle, sure it is cheap but do you need a powerband from ~3300rpm-6400rpm in a stock truck? You could advance the cam a few degrees to bring the powerband down but you will still need new springs, retainers, etc. Too much work for too little gain espically since that cam isn't matched for your ride.

Call a cam company like Crane or Comp and I highly doubt they will recommend a bump stick with specs like the Z06 one for a truck. You'd be better off with a 214/220 .520" 114lsa. That would still pull good from the hole but give a decent top end pull.

You'd still gain more in the 0-60 and ET with a high stall torque converter swap. Then you could always go to a top end screamer cam if you really want that.

Hope that helps some...

Spend your money on a converter. Cams will decrease low end power. The result is a truck that's a dog off the line but runs hard above 2500. Converter first then spend the GFs money on the cam later.

Eric, you need headers...... Thats one advantage we have over pimply Fbody teen racers, we can still have carb cert long tubes that will not affect catalytic converter (s).

My 4.8 Is NUTLESS below 2000rpm. In the mid-range it almost feels like v-tech kicks in. A good cam for the 4.8 would give up on the low end and try to improve its high end, and just skip over the weak spot with a high stall converter. I dont see any reason why the 4.8 cant rev too 7000 or higher with the right parts.

Why would a cam give up low end?
What about this Crane cam? Here's the specs for my 4.8...

208/216 .500/.200 114LSA
Excellent low-end power. Mild cam for automatics with mild or stock convertor. Crane 1.8 roller rockers recommended.
Power Band: 1500-5500 RPM's
Part #: 40-1044HR00007

I'm thinkin about gettin that cam to help me off the line, as well as some TOGs or ASMs to get the exhaust out. Of couse, I'll have LS1Edit by then...

basically, if ur gonna go cam, u need to get a stall also. the cam will make u rev higher and faster, but decrease low-end in exchange. therefor, u need the stall converter to just skip over the slow area. (this is what ricers are not able to do )
