4.10 gears and posi
#1
Hello all, glad I found this site. I currently have 3.42 gears, and I'd like to get 4.10 gears and a good posi unit. Do I need to buy a 4 series posi unit? Does GM make 4.10 gears for this rear, would that be a good choice as far as streght and price? Or are there less expensive gear sets out there? Any advice would be appreciated.

I used Genuine GM production 4.10's in Jason's truck. We used what everyone would call a 3 series posi. Nothing different for 4.10's, we used the same carrier as the GM 3.73's we had installed previously. His truck had 3.42's and a open differential to start. I found a production takeout carrier that was installed the same time as the 3.73 swap. Not sure how much the GM gears run, probably in the $300 range, Jason got a deal for $50.
If I remember correctly you can interchange the 8.5" gears with the 8.6" gears. All the new body'd Silverado's will have the 8.6" ring gear if its a 10-bolt housing.
