383 swap - oil pressure issues
i just got through finishing up my 383 swap this weekend and started my truck for the first time. Problem is when I start the truck i have very low oil pressure, but if i give it any throttle at all then the oil pressure goes up as the rpm's go up. If I let the truck idle it will die and the oil pressure goes to 0. If the motor is about 1500 rpm's then the oil pressure is at about 12-14 psi. The oil pump on the motor is a brand new high flow pump and I was extra careful not to pinch the oil pick-up tube o-ring when I put it on the motor. I let the motor run for about 10 min or so keeping the oil pressure up around 15 psi or so and my lifters haven't pumped up yet either. Should they have pumped up by now or is the low pressure not letting them pump up? My truck won't idle either, could that be because of the oil pressure or do you think I have other problems too? thanks for the help. The block is a 2000 ls1 block, if that has anything to do with it.

did you remember to put the little plstic oil plug back in the back of the block??? and did you put it in right??? if you dont you will get little to no oil pressure
btw if your oil pressure is too low the engine turns off the fuel pump.

well I talked to the guy that assembled my short block and he said that the oil plugs should've been in the block because he always ships them with the plugs in. Me being new to this I didn't know to make sure that they were in before I started putting everything on. Is there a way I can check to see if they're in before I pull the motor back out of the truck? Could I remove that very rear allen head screw in the block and look in there to see if I can see the plug? I should just see a little white barbell looking thing right?

Blue o-ring didnt work for me. I had low oil pressure with it. I got a red one and compared it to the blue one and the red fit tighter on the tube. So I put that in and that seem to cure my problem.

I bet it's the oil pump o-ring. I had the same thing happen to me when I put the motor in the Hauler's truck. I tightened the pump to the block before I tightened the pickup tube to the pump and the o-ring was kinda cocked in there sidways a bit and the oil pressure did the same thing.

the new o-ring was red, the old o-ring was blue (kind of bluish green). Dunno how much of a difference in the two because I didn't compare them. I assumed I had the right o-ring because that is what the guy from the gm parts dept gave me. I had no idea there were two different o-rings. Anyways, I bolted the oil pump on the block first, then slid the pickup tube in the pump then bolted up the tube. Should I have done it differently?
