Default 212/218 cam in 5.3 = Good fun!

Just wanted to give my input on my cam that I installed in my 5.3 Tahoe 4wd.

its the common 212/218 low lift version

I noticed a lot of mid range power increase over stock. I only installed the cam and black bear tune, and cold air intake. No headers, just a new muffler. 32" mud terrains with a level. No servo, no shift kit, no stall...

It beats my buddies hemi, beats a ford 5.4 with ease, and just recently (45 min ago) beat my buddies 04 Duramax with a 100hp tune. Rather impressing for cam only! He whooped me from a dig, obvious, but from a 25 roll its a different story! Dont be afraid of this small monster!

I'm installing the same cam in my 5.3 Silverado 4x4 a week from today! Any suggestions before I install? Did it idle okay before the tune?

Its a spunky little cam and am pleasantly surprised with this 5.3. All my friends have either a Hemi, or a diesel. Most of them DESPISE the GM trucks.. I now know why

I can post a vid of what it sounded like right after the install pre-tune. It loped a lot more than expected. After my retune, it doesn't do it quite as much.

Hello fellow Iowan. I was contemplating throwing this cam in my DD Avalanche. I was thinking headers first but I don't like the problems people run into with 4WD and headers. It sounds like the cam swap is still worth it without the headers. I have a CAI, muffler swap, and I tuned it with HPTuners.

I'd be interested in some video clips of it as well when you get a chance. I assume you changed springs as well?

Thanks for that post Skaffy03. I have been thinking about that cam for my DD. I drive 125 miles a day to work, so I cant afford a race truck. Thanks for the real world feedback. I was planning on a higher stall, but maybe I will keep it stock for the gas mileage. With the miles I have, I am planning on going thorough the engine and trans at t same time.

i have this cam on my turbo setup and really like it, also have a 3000 converter

but for the Avalanche i would do gears before a cam swap, i dont think there is a cam out there that has better torque than the stock one
