I dont recommend a ranger delete. It only disables the PCM from commanding it to turn on.
The parts that fail will stay and you will be fixing them again. I suggest doing a delete like in the link above, and talking to blackbear or nelson performance for a tune. They will do alot better than a tuner you buy that plugs in.

Dealership is expensive unless you have a buddy that can get stuff at cost. Ls7 lifters are around $120-150 online.

Go ahead and put a baby size cam in it 212/218 range since you will be getting a tune anyways. I would up grade the push rods also if you decide to put a cam in it.

thanks for the advice and I'm leaning towards the delete kit.

I appreciate the advice, I just dont know if my wrenching skills are adequate enough to install a cam correctly.

Yeah I hear yea, it can be scarey if you have never done it or watched. It is so important to not nick the cam or bearings when installing or removal. Also very critical to get the cam lined up properly with the dots on the cam and crank gears. If the cam is off by a few degrees it will run like total crap with valves being open at tdc

I'm getting ready buy parts and was wondering if anyone thought it was a bad idea to save a couple of hundred bucks on buying the non afm active lifters (sealed power brand) from oreilly's or autozone for $9 as compared to the dealership for $35. it's weird because O'R wants $54 for the active lifter (sealed power brand) and the dealership wants $45 for the OEM...wth is that?
