2008 Silverado 5.3 Drop Lifter and engine advice
hey yall, The old AFM finally bit me right after I made my last payment on my silverado and it's out of warranty. I'm internally debating whether to replace all of the lifters and cam then buying a ranger to disable the AFM on my 123K 5.3 or buying a crate 5.3/disabling the AFM or possibly swapping the 5.3 for 6.0. I noticed the 2008 6.0 had a 4L70E trans and the 5.3 has a 4L60E. is it correct to assume that I have to go to the 4L70E if I go to a 6.0? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

This sounds familiar. I just joined the forum because I'm going through the same exact thing with my 2007 Suburban. I just sourced a new 6.0L crate engine without AFM. I also ordered a rebuilt 4L65E to replace my 4L60E from Gearstar. I'm having a local shop do the swap but I've been doing my homework on it. Just my .02. As long as your engine is sound and you just have collapsed lifters, it'll be cheaper to just buy a delete kit from any number of sources. You'll also need to buy a cam to go with the kit. I'm pretty sure you can have a tuner turn off the AFM via the software. I decided to go the 6.0 swap route because my engine had some other issues and my trans was also showing signs of wear. And I thought...what the hell, it'll be cool to upgrade to a 6.0L. So that's what I'm doing.

I picked up the new crate engine for 4k, although the guy who originally bought it says he paid 6k. I also found one from a nj recycler with 30k miles for 2k. I opted for the new engine. If you google Chevy afm delete kit it'll give you a ton of websites with all that's included. Most I saw didn't come with a cam. That was a separate purchase.

So I pulled the head on the right side and found one lifter shorter then the other but no damage to it or the cam. Hopefully replacing the lifters will solve the problem

That's how I found my lifter as well. If everything else looks good then you're definitely better off just replacing the lifters and calling it a day. You might want to get the heads rebuilt while your there. Also, I think Chevy came out with a revised AFM lifter. You might want to look into it to make sure you buy the revised part number. If you go the route of just replacing the afm lifters with new ones then you might want to look at the plug in module that will disable the AFM. At least you won't be cycling the lifters on and off causing them to stick in the collapsed position. At least this is the way I understand the system to work.

While your in there do the AFM delete , some LS7 lifters and have the AFM tuned out of the PCM . A performance tune will also make you fall in love your truck again .

I'm going to buy the lifters from the dealership so hopefully they'll be the latest. I'm prob either going to go get the ranger unit that disables the afm or buy a tuner so I can change the tune and disable the afm. Thanks for the feedback
