Default 2002 GMC Sierra 2500 4x4 Issue

Hello ladies and gentlemen, I am new here I know a fair amount about vehicles but I am only human and there are limits in my knowledge haha…

I have the truck in the subject title, I bought it a few months ago it runs pretty well, no engine codes, but what I noticed when idling at a red light it almost seems like every 3-5 seconds it runs rough almost like a misfire.

I have done all the work to this truck to get it squared up, except plugs and wires and a fuel filter.

I will be doing those things this weekend, but is this a common issue? When I’m cursing along the highway it runs smooth as butter or even just going down city streets smooth, even with hard acceleration no hesitation or blips.

Im just trying to figure out if it’s a fuel issue (it would be injectors I guess or perhaps dirty fuel filter).

or an ignition issue, this case being the spark plugs.

Regardless after I install the parts I will know for sure, but I should I would come here and ask some experienced people.

also I am not sure if this is related to the what seems to be a misfire issue, but every 4th or 5th start is a hard start.

what I mean is most times I’ll get in turn the key no hesitation, fires up as normal. However the occasional time it cranks for 2-3 seconds then fires… which kind of makes me believe it’s a fuel issue.

who knows haha. Thanks for your time.

For the hesitation, You would want to check the FPR (Fuel Pressure Regulator) and also the Fuel Pump's output.

very interesting, I was unaware of that part. I looked it up, easy to access and fairly cheap so I’ll replace that anyway.

i appreciate the suggestion, thank you.

If the FPR is leaking or the pump is not holding peak pressure it will have a hard time starting.

After all, that truck is 20 years old.

true enough, I need to replace the fuel pump at some point because the fuel sending switch / gauge (fuel level gauge) doesn’t work all the time.

works fine when it’s full down to 1/4 but at that point it just bounces around and completely doesn’t work.

im not a fan of dropping the tank, also not too interested in removing the box / bed.

so I might just cut an access port in the bed to make it easy.

Please don't cut a hole in the bed lmao

You can tilt the bed over to one side to access the top of the tank. It is super easy to remove the bed and really it is pretty simple to drop the tank

You mean like this when the 36 gallon tank is 3/4 full and your in the middle of no where with a loaded trailer???

As long as you don't buy a crappy one you won't have to do the job twice...

When I was younger my family took a trip to Colorado and the Tahoe fuel pump **** it's pants on the way there. Uncle and dad had to purchase all the tools and a walmart jack to do the repair in the condo garage we stayed at lol just a lil anecdote to share

Ironically, I think that was some where in Colorado off the 44 when that happened... I had a basic tool kit and a battery 1/2 impact with me. We also brought a floor Jack.

It was the Water pump job the evening before that we had to buy some tools for.... The Guys at that Auto parts store were Nice as hell. We had to back track 40 miles because they were the only one around that had it in stock. They let me do it in the parking lot and let me use there bathroom to clean up in after just before closing.
