Default 02 yukon power upgrades

Ok I'll start off by saying I'm no master mechanic or engine builder, what I am is someone who does all the mechanic work on my vehicles and learn as i go and know how to rebuild most things but dont have to knowledge to know what things work best where so to speak.

I've got an 02 yukon with the 5.3 with a 4l60e bolted to it and 3:73 gears 4wd. Currently running 285/75/16s. I'm wanting to get more out of it, it seems a little sluggish towing our boat and low range power. I know I will benefit alot from changing the gears especially with the bigger tires and plan to do that eventually right now I'm planning out my build when i rebuild my motor most likely next year. Lets just say I wont necessarily be on a budget but I'm not spending a crap ton of money to get 50 hp. Eventually i would like to put a small turbo on it but dont know that i will ever do that.

now that thats out of the way what are some performance adders i can do while i do the rebuild? It'll be mostly a daily driver towing on the weekends and just something fun to drive. It'll never be at the track but maybe on some mild trails occasionally

A small camshaft upgrade, intake tube, custom tune would be an easy 40hp for sure. Add headers if you want then do like 4.10's for gearing.

Depending on what you actually do, consider 1 size larger injectors. Go from 25lb/hr to 31lb/hr to give you the extra head room on a camshaft swap. Turbo stuff way later on would need much more stuff like larger pump and even larger injectors.

Headers are YUUUUUUUJJJJJE.

After that, a torque converter. Often the things that make a vehicle faster, aren't "the engine". Gears kinda fall into the same category. Problem with those, relatively speaking, is that they still have the same effect even in 4th gear with the clutch locked up. Which isn't necessarily "bad", only, that you need to understand and choose wisely among, do you want acceleration from a stop, or the ability to go up hills towing; as well as, what is your tolerance for adverse side effects like increased fuel consumption on the highway.

Apart from that, your best upgrade will be, more CID. I highly recommend a LQ9 out of a later model Denali or Escalade.
