Why not use an air locker? When you race lock it in, when you're not leave it open.

Air locker:

extra weight
more things to not work
easier broken (torque capacity is lower)
who'd want to drive around with an open diff

They have elctric lockers now, air lockers are officially obsolete. The electrics are nice for off road/street-strip. Full spool action in the mud/track, and great street manners at the flip of a switch. No noise, etc. Expensive, more work, but for somebody with some money to burn, not a bad deal.
