What tranny is in my truck?
#1
I have a 04 Sierra with the 4.8 and 5-spd. My buddy is doing a 4.8 swap in his fc and wants to use the same 5-speed I have. I wasnt really sure what tranny it is. He isnt interested in a T-56 because of the cost that he cant afford. Which is the ther reason he is running the 4.8 and the fact his power goals are also fairly low. All he plans to do is minor head porting cam, headers and exhaust. He is shooting for 300whp. Is this the same tranny used in the v6 truck or is it is t-5 or something else. Thanks for the help.

Not a T-5. "FC" is a second gen RX-7, right? The truck 5 speeds are NV3500's, and as you have no doubt noticed, they do not respond well to shifting quickly. I had a RCSB v6 '01 silvy with the 5-spd, and the 3-4 shift was the only one that could be accomplished reasonably quick without feeling like I was doing something evil to the poor thing. Also, I'm not sure how well the NV3500's innards would stand up to 300 rwhp, but in a lighter chassis, it might have a fighting chance.
If I were your friend, I'd just keep my eyes peeled for a wrecked 87-95 Mustang and take the 302 and T-5 out of that. With the right heads and cam, I'm sure 300 rwhp wouldn't be out of the question, and parts are dirt cheap for those things.
EDIT: I see you are into the import engine swap thing, so I'm sure you know all of the options. I have toyed with the idea of picking an RX7 up myself and doing the same thing as a project.

I'm pretty sure the 4.3 trucks got the NV3500 (I know the S-10s did, thought the FS 4.3s did, too) and the V8 trucks got the NV4500. Either way, neither trans is good for a swap into a sports car. He's better off saving for that T56, it will handle a good amount of power.

NV4500's were used in 3/4-ton and 1-ton GM & Dodge trucks (including early CTD's) and are very stout. Offroaders love to use them for swaps into Jeeps and early broncos.
I saw that Dodge used a lighter duty version in their 1500 trucks, but didn't see any reference to GM using it in the 1/2 tons.

In 1992 Dodge and General Motors trucks started appearing in showrooms with one of the most versatile transmissions ever to be offered in a production truck: the New Venture Gear 4500. General Motors applications include it as an option in 3/4 and 1-ton full size trucks. Dodge standard duty units come in trucks with the 5.2 and 5.9 liter engine, while Dodge HD versions are used with Cummins diesels and V10’s.

Is there any bell housing so that I could use a T-5 and bolt it to a Gen III block. I am not really a fan of the 302 nor is he. NV4500's are a very heavy tranny correct they weight more than a t-56 correct. So the v-6, v-8 1500 tanny is the NV3500 and the 2500-3500 have the NV4500. I believe there is a member on here running the NV3500 in a joe gibbs trubo truck making over 440hp and having so issues yet.

TurboGibbs did a T56 swap over from the NV3500. There might be someone else, not sure though.
If anyone does make a custom bellhousing that would make a T-5 work with a Gen III GM motor, I'm sure the combined price would get you up into used T-56 territory.
Lakewood makes a bellhousing that allows you to bolt up a Muncie or T-10 four speed to an LS1, PN15005.
