Default Weird noise coming from front differential/wheel bearing...

So i have a pretty stock 02 z71 silverado with about 32k miles on it... went offroading in the mountains a couple of weeks ago and noticed when i was gettin back on the highway to go home a funny lil rotational noise comin from what sounded like the drivers front wheel... just figured it was a rock stuck in the tread cause once i got up to 60 or so i couldnt hear it... but the noise has stuck with me and then the other day i had to put it in 4wd again when i was coming down from the ski slopes and the rotational noise (which only existed from 30-50 mph) turned into a more constant whine when 4wd is engaged.. which immediately concerned me. anyone have any ideas as to what i could check? before i put it back into 4wd i thought maybe i had messed up a wheel bearing when i was offroading.. but now i dont know whats wrong.. i experimented and the whine is there wether i put it in auto 4wd or 4hi... does that mean i should check the axle or the transfer case? cv joints? what do i look for? any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated..

If the noise changes pitch while cruising and turning the steering wheel from right to left, left to right, etc., then it's more than likely a bad wheel bearing. (try this in 2wd)

see thats the thing it doesnt really change pitch... i can just hear the velocity change... the only time the noise changes pitch is if i engage the 4wd... when the sound becomes constant and higher pitched.. i guess ill just have to jack it up and play around with the wheel and cv shafts tomorrow...
