Default Weighed my stock GM 20" wheels - holy crap!

I wanted to post this info as technical reference in case anyone ever wanted or needed the information. Today I had some new tires put on my Silverado and while the rims were bare I brought my scale to weigh them. Here is a pic of the wheel I am running on my truck

Each wheel bare, no balance weights or center cap, weighed 41.4 pounds a piece!!!! Once the center cap, wheel weights and lug nuts are on its easily over 42lbs I bet. The tires I installed, General Grabber UHP in 275/55r20 size, came in at 38.5lbs a piece. So in total I am looking at right at or over 80lbs per wheel and tire. I think that's crazy and will definitely go to a lighter wheel. The wheels I am looking at are the Centerline Tomahawk Stingray III's and they are said to weigh in at 28lbs or less for the same size. It should be a noticeable difference when I swap!

They sure are pretty but this is why I went 18s on my new one. After researching 18's the tires are so much lighter than 17s that they are virtually the same weight as the 17 combo. Tire rack has a ton of tire/wheel weights so you can browse them!

Yeah, It is nuts. When I picked up my truck it had those wheels on it. I put a set of black powder coated 20" older LTZ's on the truck since that is what I had, and they physically felt even heavier. I plan on going to a much lighter wheel. The wheels I run on my car are 11lbs for the fronts, and 16lbs. for the rear if I recall correctly. And slicks are light, as well as ET Fronts.

When I had my SSS 20s with 275/55-20s they felt like boat anchors compared to my Centerline 20s with 285/50-20s. Never weighed either set though. But to compare, I now run 265/60-18s with some crap American Racing wheels and my Centerline combo is still lighter, but not by much.

when I ran the tahoe 20's with 275/45/20s, they came in at 84lbs each, huge difference when I swapped to 18" centerlines.

I am definitely making the switch to Centerlines! I can keep my 275/55r20 tire and weigh in about 66lbs for the combo.

I looked at the 285/50r20 and even though it's shorter by about 3/4" it's actually about 3lbs heavier. Be sure to compare the weights of each tire from a specific manufacturer. When I was picking out my 275/55 I noticed a few brands that were 8lbs heavier or more!

The chrome finished ones MIGHT be easier to keep clean. Other wise they're all polished aluminum. You could always plasti-dip them for the winter...
