True bolt on rear 15" wheel and 5 lug swap for 99-04
#41
That's a very complicated question at the moment. For starters, I really want to run 15s to achieve a massive weight savings. My front wheels/tires are currently 72 lbs each.
Thing is, I have also upgraded to the 05+ rotors/calipers. So the minimum wheel size is 17" (without grinding). The 99-04s can run 15s stock.
The other issue is cost. Swapping to 5 lug isn't exactly cheap (new hubs are $440 plus the cost of redrilling rotors). The only game in town for 6 lug front wheels is Bogart and those are pricey. They run about $450 a wheel for the 17" street/strip wheels. Whereas, a 17" 5 lug Racestar wheel is half of that.
Currently I've got 5 lug in the back and 6 lug in front, so in reality I do need to swap to 5 lug up front. I may get around to it, I may not. I'm getting to the point with this truck where I need to do significant upgrades (fuel system) and stuff may start breaking. And I really don't want to go there yet at this time. If I can click off a 10 second run and do that consistently as it sits now I think I'll be happy and I may just move onto another project.

But u said,
"As for the front end, I haven't exactly decided what I want to do yet, but 1320 wheels is offering brand new Timken hubs with 5 lug pattern for $219 each. A more economical option is for me to send them my stock hubs to convert for $90 each. I need to see if they can do them with 14 mm studs. Their site says they come with 1/2 studs."
That's a +$200 difference per wheel from your original post.
Where'd u get $450 wheel for Bogart fronts from?
At this point, u gotta do 5 lugs on front, u'r committed to make em match.

And yes, 99-04 can run 15s over stock front brakes.
Like it says above the new Timken hubs are $440. They're $180 if you send in your old ones, but what condition are mine in? My truck has 185k on it. I'm guessing I'd be better off with new ones.
The Bogart pricing comes from Oakley on here, he called them.

Duh, I just realized... 219 x 2 = $440
I thought it doubled in 1 1/2 months. I caught it when I saw the redrilled originals. $90 x 2... My bad.
Oakley deals w/. Bogart direct I assume? But while u got choices w 5 lug conversion, u'r gonna be darn close to custom Bogarts spec'd to your liking w/o all the fussing. I thought u DD your truck, so mismatch matters little. Not poo pooing your idea, & this would all matter little had GM just kept 5 lugs.
I've got a similar dilemma, I only wanna go bigger wheel to stuff huge brakes in, no bling factor. That limits my choices if I wanna hook. Then when I saw the race wheels last night, it wasn't the $, it was just what way (decision) to go.

Yea after watching GMCtrk go to 5 lug, and talking to him through the process, I decided to just order bogarts. I called Rich Bogart directly to get prices and talk about my options. He was great to talk with. $385 each for the 15x10 and $450 each for the 17x7 up front. I wanted to run the 7" wide wheel because I treat my truck as a daily driver. So at the end of the day, Bogarts will be 100-200$ more expensive than running the 5 lug racestars and doing the 5 lug swap. I don't like the racestars and I already have two sets of 6 lug wheels and tires sitting at my shop so Bogarts are what I have decided on. Keeping 6 lug, I can throw on any of my other wheels anytime I want.
Racestars are super cheap compared to a lot of light weight wheels out there so the 5 lug swap would actually be more expensive if you went with a different wheel.
My 16" cragar soft 8's rubbed on the calipers up front and my truck is a 2003. So I don't know how much grinding I would have to do on the front to get 15's to fit.

I just did the math and it looks like the 5 lug conversion is actually more expensive than just ordering Bogarts for those who are interested.
Timken 5 lug hubs - $438.00
Moser 5 lug axles - $350
Moser redrill rotors - $174.00
15" Racestars - $350.00
17" Racestars - $400.00
So the 5 lug conversion should be around $1712.00 and the Bogarts are $1670. So depending on your future goals or wants, its really a toss up between the two.

Some things worth thinkin about. All of us trucks from '99 - are 6 lug, so it's a given we all started w/ em. Therefore, 1 must do this conversion & procur a set of 5 lug wheels b4 they even think of getting a 2nd set of 5 luggers.
The only way after 5 lug conversion, it might possibly be sorta free, is if u got 5 lugs that fit other vehicles w/ same spacing & offset.
So u were quoted prices strictly for the street strip version? Cause if not, u don't need wheels folding up & this cost comparison gets closer.
I talked to Bogart yrs ago, I asked a lot of questions & while helpful, he never called back. That just pisses me off. Usu. when businesses do that, I don't give em another chance, depending on a variety of factors.
