Default Torque converter slippage

Threw some new spark plugs in yesterday hoping it might cure my slight stumble off the line. Went out and did a brake stall and none of the power got to the tranny, the truck didn't torque or anything, so I'm thinking great. Drove back up to my buddies house and had his dad come out and ride w/ me (he used to rebuild trannies for 20 years) and tried it again. This time it kinda torqued and didn't rev up as high. 2nd time I tried it it didn't launch as hard as it used to (spin the tires) but it did torque the truck and didn't stumble quite as much.

Is there some reason that the torque converter would slip that much more when it's a little cold, as the only thing different between the few runs that I can tell is it would have heated up some.
