Default Super tranny cooler?

Just wondering, If I buy a big heat exchanger to upgrade the Radix heat exchanger, can I use the old Radix heat exchanger as a super sized tranny cooler?

Depending on how your tranny is/was built. I dont think the HX will hold up to the line pressure of the tranny. See if the HX has a burst pressure stamped on it somewhere.

Hadn't thought about the pressure. I didn't know the whole system was under pressure. Or at least not the same amount of pressure as while in the tranny pushing clutches around. The modern automatic transmission is evil witchcraft as far as I'm concerned.

Yea, they have a good amount of pressure in them. Most of the B&M coolers are rated at 200psi burst pressure. If you a pretty hefty built tranny, some of them can push around 240-270psi line pressure depending on the pump used.

I'd get a real trans cooler, and if you go to the upgraded Radix HX, use them both. It can only help in keeping things cooler in the intake.

I was looking at a 30,000lb gvw cooler. I think I'm gonna get it.

The upgraded HE is not the Magnacharger one. I already have that one. I'm looking at a Fluidyne 8" (H) X 3.5" (D) X 25.375" (W). I think that should cool the intercooler fluid down, might even put an electric fan on it depending on where I decide to mount it. I guess I could list the old HE in the classifieds.

My next question is why do the tranny lines go through the radiator? Couldn't I just run the line out of the tranny into the tranny cooler and the line out of the cooler directly back to the tranny? Why the extra step on going through he radiator? Can I just plug those holes in the radiator if I re-route the tranny lines as I just mentioned?

Your radiator acts like a cheap trans cooler. That's the way you mount an afetrmarket trans cooler, just eliminate the radiator part. You also might want to get in touch with mjhoward on his extra heat exchanger. I think that would be a better, and cheaper way to do it.
