I don't know if it is a old versus new style, but when i ordered one for my build that is what i got... Also it fits better. The 4 tabs that hold it in there are better...

Actually 91-96. In 97 they went to a center lube so the hole in the SG is actually much smaller than the pic above.

Yes the chamfer side needs to go down otherwise you will have issues with the direct drum hitting the center support.

The replacement washer you have is the 200C/200-4R sunshell to low/reverse clutch housing washer. The standard one is .060 thick and they have another one they offer the is .080 thick. By installing the thicker washer in this location you can take some slop out of the reaction carrier to output carrier. Basically reduce how much its floating around in there as the rotating assembly is going through the various gears. Its also an added bonus that the washer you got is wider than the factory washer!

Now this one does not look so healthy....just started a teardown of a built 80E that was overheating from day 1.

Looks like a lube failure. You need to put a flowmeter on the cooler line after the cooler to see what you are getting for flow.
Do you have the extended fitting in the rear?

Flow is good. Same cooling setup(all new)/same converter/different 80E I have trouble getting it over 140*F. Will start a new thread.
