Default Stick with 80E or go to something else?

Getting tired of pulling the 80E. At least this time I got 1000 miles out of it. Also looking at going to 2WD.

Last time I had to pull it because reverse was just not there one morning. This time 3,4 are gone but 1,2 still feel tight and the pressure looks good. Not sure if these issues are directly related to the trans routinely getting smacked with big torque in a 6200lb truck or just blockages or a stuck part. Unless downshifts to 2nd are somehow hard on them, I can't see 3,4 taking anywhere near the abuse 1,2 have seen as the only time 3rd has seen WOT was the 1 trip to the track last year.

Should I stick with the 80E or go to something that has less weak links? I could stand to lose OD if it means less headaches. An SFI bell would be nice too.

That sucks man, cant believe your eating 80e's.

Maybe a turbo 400 or powerglide would suit you.

Powerglide is a neggative in the heavy weight, 80e or th400 or maybe even a th350..... Ive actually had my 80e pulled out quite a few times myself and its defiantly pissing me off pulling that pig out....I have contemplated on going th400 with a manual valve body for a while now but i have to much invested into this 80! So if your not to much outta pocket get the Th400

I wouldn't mind just pulling the trans, but you have to remove half the truck first to get it out. Losing 4WD would at least make it a little less work- wouldn't have to remove the torsion bar crossmember and the t-case. Top bolts are a real pain with the trans shield and the blowers up top.

Trans was built by a reputable builder.

Cooler is B & M Hi-Tek with fan.

The 80E can hold 1400-1500hp with the right builder. Majority of the 1-3 gear components are shared with the th400.

No 3-4 could be a solenoid problem.

A 4L80E is as tough as any unit out there. If you are going through them, something isn't right in the build or install (tune, wiring, control).

What failures have you had in the past?

Once it was the tune as the stock 80E tune allows lockup in 2nd at WOT. I didn't catch this at the bottom of the 2nd gear apply table when going through the tune on a small screen computer - looked like the table was all maxed out just like a 60E tune. Normally, I would have no WOT lockup in my tune.

I believe the other time it was 2nd that I lost.

This time I did a quick stab at the throttle (.3 sec in the log)from a roll and when I let off it just stayed in 2nd although 3rd was being commanded. When I got up a few more MPH 4th grabbed for about 10 sec, but then it let go and fell back to 2nd. After it did that a couple of times I just slowed down and put it in manual 2nd for the drive home.

I had recently been noticing what seemed like the converter locking/unlocking while the cruise was on(audible variations in engine RPM/blower whine). Logs just showed "Locked." Now that I think about it, could also have been the trans slipping. I did look at the tach a couple of times and it was not bouncing up and down. Think it was around 2200 RPM at 67 MPH(3:73 axle ratio)
