Default Steering shaft problem..

I know a bunch of silverado owners have had problems with a clunking of their steering shafts. I had mine serviced almost 18 months ago and the dealer said the fix was a relubrication with different grease. Well now my warranty is way gone and the problem has come back. I get a severe clunking and shaking feel in the steering while turning and hitting bumps. Has anyone got a concrete fix for this? I also have started to get a bit of float up front as well. My trucks got 57000 on it so it just might be time, but has anyone else experienced this as well ?

There was a thread on this a couple of weeks ago. You can lube the steering shaft, but it will come back. Borgeson also make a replacement shaft that supposedly will fix the problem.

Yes, I would just re-lube it if I were you. Your local dealer will sell the kit for about $15 and it comes with the directions. It may be a little time consuming but for the money it is a decent deal. And no, it will not cure the problem, it will just fix it for the short term.

All you guys are only mentioning the lube kit. GM came out with a replacment shaft to fix this problem. I got mine from the dealership for around $50.00. I have seen them on Ebay for even less. If I were you, I would not waste my time with the lube kit. It only works for a little while and then you get to do it over and over again. For the one time price of $50.00, the problem is fixed for good. My steering has been great since I installed the replacment shaft. Just my two cents.

How long ago did you replace the shaft? I thought I read somewhere that someone got GM's "latest and greatest" shaft (it's been re-designed a few times), and the clunk returned within a year. I thought it was more expensive than that also...if it's only $50 and it works, I'll eventually invest in one. I lubed mine a few years ago, and I'm just starting to get an occassional beginning stage of the clunk under certain conditions.

Had my shaft replaced under warranty 2 years ago next month and the clunk came back right before summer. Just bought the grease kit this time. So far so good.

All I can tell you is that the updated shaft that I got within the last year is still working good. When I used the lube kit on my old shaft, it only lasted a couple of months before the clunk came back.
