Default Stall question.

I am kind of new at getting into the engine and knowing what everything does.
Im not realy understanding what exactly a Stall converter does. Can someone help clear that up for me. What are the effects of it on a take off etc and how do you match it up to your cam.( i have an Ls1 cam)

it lets the motor build more RPM when you stomp on the gas or hold the brake while rolling on the gas. Basicly it gets the motor rpm up to were your cam starts making power

right... also to put it in perspective a little bit better than that even...

you know in a manual vehicle, you can dump the clutch whereever you want for your launch... well in an automatic, the stall (torque) converter acts as a clutch, but it is set for different speeds... the stock one is around 1400-1800 rpms (roughly)...

you can brake stall it (holding the brake and gas at the same time) and you will see where you can launch at when you let off the brake. Or you can "flash" stall it.. basically where the motor will pic up in the first gear on take off... when looking for a torque converter, the number that is advertised is more than likly the flash stall number... so like i have a 2600-2800 stall... i can brake stall it to about 2200 or so, depending on how much the brakes are able to hold.. and than flash it at around 2600 or 2800 rpms.

hope this helps, sorry for the long winded version, lol

And another question. How do you brake stall it to 2200. Most i can do is 1500 rpms and after that i start spinnin. And explain to me more on how to flash stall it, i couldnt really understand that.

flash, you let off the brake and punch the gas, the rpm will jump to where to stall starts to hold (clutch grabs) you have a stock stall i assume which is why you just start to spin because the "clutch" is engaged and your power is being put to the ground then. if you had a higher stall i.e. 3000, your "clutch" would be looser, therefore it would take a higher rpm for it to engage and begin to put power to the wheels.

are you ever going to go with a bigger cam than that? if you dont plan to then just go with a Trail Blazer stall or something to that nature

For max acceleration you want to have a stall speed right at max torque. So the engine accelerates from peak torque to the shift point.

the LS1 engines are rated at 4000 rpm for peak torque, stock that is.

My S10 V6 TC made a big difference in the way my truck accelerates, a Trailblazer Inline 6 cylinder TC will do the same for a GEN 3/4 engine.
