Second the recommendation for 4.30's
IF you are dead set on staying with the short 31" tires you now have, you'd be okay with 4.10 gears.
IF you're likely to roll on 33 inch tires, you will be MUCH happier with 4.30's or even 4.56 if towing..

3.73 probably would have been a better all around gear but i kinda agree going up one ratio wasnt really worth it. would have always been stuck in the middle of getting a slightly less mpg without much payoff in acceleration.
that is what I’m afraid of if I don’t get the 4.10’s. I’m already wishing I did a bigger cam

Looks like with the 4.30’s I would be running about the same rpm at 75 if I ran 33’s as it will with 4.10’s with 31’s. I guess I need to decide if I’m going up on my tires before I swap gears.

3rd on the 4.30s

i recently went from 4.10s to 4.30s with truetrac, i have a 30" tire, next time ill be going 4.56s. it doesnt fall on its face, it picks up speed great with the 6.0 BTR stage 4 truck cam stock stall. i say go for the 4.30s. im at 2200 @ 70MPH

Thanks for all the input, lots of good stuff. I think for now I’m going to go with the 4.10’s, I think it will be a good jump over the 3.42’s. So when are we having a working on my truck party?!

I know all the talk in this thread has been focused on 4.10 and up. But don't forget, you have an option between 3.73 and 4.10: you could go with 3.90.

I'm was there, I'm there- I had 3.42's and wanted to go 3.90's. Buddy at the shop talked me into 4.10's and I sure am glad; made a night and day difference and gas mileage was unaffected here at 7,000ft. I'm currently running 255/75R17's which are what- 32.05" and the truck scoots around town great. Now a cam and heads would really compliment the 4.10's which I haven't done....
