Someone talk me into some gears.
I am pretty sure I know what general consensus will be but I would like some testimonials. I have an 06 Sierra z71 crew cab with 3.42’s cam, headers, cai and a tune. I’m looking to put new gears in. I was thinking of going with 3.73’s it after a lot of research I see people wish they had gone 4.10. Unfortunately all the threads I read people are concerned a great deal about MPG’s or a high max MPH. 80% of my driving is city, however I don’t want to be running 3 grand at 75mph. With a gear ratio calculator I found that with 4.10’s I would be around 2,200-2,300 rpm at 75 and I can live with that for sure. So what would you go with and why? I run 265/70r17 tires, I just want better acceleration but don’t want the truck to fall on it’s face when it hits 3rd gear.

I put 4.10 in my wifes stock 2012 2wd crew cab sierra and picked up about 3 MPGs going down the highway...if she drives like a normal person....however, most of the time she drives like a dick. on a resent trip from weatherford texas to colorado springs running down the highway at 80, we mostly stayed in the low to mid 20's MPG, untill we hit the mountains, even then it drove way better when going up some of the steep stuff. it didnt seem like the cruise control was shifting as much.

I have a gauge for that

On my 04 ext cab lifted 6" with 35s:
Stock 3.73 gears got anywhere from 12 to 18mpg (city and highway). Switch to 4.56s and truck felt 2,000lb lighter and was much better to drive. Got between 14-16mpg city and highway. Youll notice the average MPG stayed the same, but highway mpg went down a little while city mileage came up some.

I noticed my truck does way better since the cam and tune towing and on hills but from a dead stop it still feels sluggish. I’m leaning toward the 4.10’s.my tires are just over 31”, but I would like to go to 32’s or 33’s the next time I replace them.

I had 3.73’s in a rcsb 4.8L with the same mods but a little bigger cam. It did pretty well for having a stock converter but would fall on its face when it hit 3rd gear at about 87mph. I didn’t know if it was because of the cams power band or the gears.

picking my yukon up later today after getting 4.10 installed, from 3.42 with a 6l80 stock size tire 32" tire
3.73 probably would have been a better all around gear but i kinda agree going up one ratio wasnt really worth it. would have always been stuck in the middle of getting a slightly less mpg without much payoff in acceleration.
