I just noticed that I have an axle seal leaking. I had a professional shop install my 4:10 gears, and this will be the second time it needs to be replaced. The only problem is i just moved to Rhode Island from Texas. I am going to try to do this my self but I have a few questions. I also have an Eaton posi in it.

Is there anything different from A G80 to an Eaton when pulling it apart?

How do you get the c-clips out? I am reading a manual, and it says to remove it part way, then rotate until it hits the case. I guess you just grab the clips after that?

After the c-clips are removed, then the axles come out. I think I understand the process after that. The installation is opposite of the removal.

BTW- I just need to replace the drivers side seal.

not much to add, but if you're goin to replace might as well do both for insurance you know?

 

Remove the bolt that holds the large pin in th carrier. Rotate it so you can slide it out. Then push in on the axles and the clips will come out.

If you are going through seals pretty quick, I'd inspect the axles and axle bearings too. Once the seal is out the axle bearing is right there although you may need a slide hammer to get it out.

 

I was thinking the bearings might be bad, but they were suppose to be replaced when I got the gears installed. Maybe the axles?

 

I just blew my third seal! I had the same shop replace the 1st two. When I brought it back the second time, they noticed a pit in the axle. They installed a bearing and seal relocator kit. They said it usually works. Of course, with my luck, it didn't.

Long story short... Check for pits or any other imperfections on my axle at the seal.
