Redoing drivetrain: what converter & gears for 80e
#22
Whoever told you to put the truck together like that told you *** backward IMO...
Build the engine around what you want it to do and the vehicle it's going in and it's intended use.
Choose your trans and stall speed with the engine and vehicle use in mind and if you will be towing, drag racing, just DDing it, mostly city, mostly hwy etc...
Choose your gear based on the same basic things and where the engine makes it's best power and where you want to be RPM wise crossing the traps (if you're going to want it to run the number) if you do a lot of hwy driving, you could go taller, or vise versa...
A gear is more like a 'tuning' change to me. Changing a ring and pinion is easier than changing a camshaft. You can adjust it up or down to get the RPM where you want it, tire size is also just as much a tuning tool as a looks thing to me.

01 chevy tahoe
engine 6.0 HO stock (no cam picked out yet)
trans: 4l80e (doing swap now)
stall converter (Im planing 3700 or 4000 stall) [had a 3600 in 60e and LOVED IT]
tires: 285/50/20s
current gear ratio: 3.73s (was planing 4.56) [had some behind my over weight suburban, it did well]
I have LPP longtube headers, ORY, stock muffler, CAI from Airaid, PCM4less street tune.
I have yet to pick out a cam for my combo. But my truck is heavy. I know I need gears and stall to get moving. (i know it will not be the fastest lightest thing)
I will NEVER TOW! (maybe 3 passengers thats it)
I am NOT interested in time slips, or going to the track. (but I wont mind knowing what the truck will do)
I would like to PUT a smile on my face everytime I drive the truck.
This truck commutes me to work and friends house, while showing out on the street here and there. Drive about 40 miles a day! Some days I may put 200 on it. I may take it on the interstate maybe 3-4 times a year, going to surrounding states etc. 4-5hrs. My longest trip is 7hrs away I may do that once a year. So I can sacrifice a bit of gas mileage
I want more fun, and I want my heavy Tahoe to move out good.
Its a street truck, I want it nasty out of the hole, from digs, and some roll races, even on the hwy, I like to punch it out. quick spurts to tripple digits then back to the posted.
For me just doing those thing I already did, the truck hauls ***, so I think its pretty good combo, just need the right cam to pull it all together.

I understand what youre doing... I'm just saying I'd have gone about it completely differently based on the several trucks I've put together... But good luck with it, hope it works out like you planned.

i had a 3600 stall and 4.30s behind a cammed 6.0 and i thought it was perfect... had 29.7 inch tires....
you def knew you had a converter.. but first gear was still pretty long.. i would go 4.10s minimum...
but i am with these guys that gear actually helps on the street.. the truck wasnt just a big burnout anymore like it was with the 60e..

ok, well I am glad Im in the right direction. I stayed with the 3700 stall; I pick it up tomorrow. Im ordering gears tonight. 4.56s. I will be happy to have some dependability with this setup. Going to be doing a cam around xmas. So plenty of researching to do.
