Rebuilt 4l80 problem
#11
The front of those planetaries, where the bearings/bushings ride, do not look good at all. Hotspotted badly, whether that be from lack of lubrication, I don't know? But certainly too much heat/friction going on in that spot.

Fortunately the color on those planetaries is lighting in the pic. They're scuffed, but not black. I'm not sure I know what caused the wear though.
I started teardown & cleaning of the subassemblies. So far piston seals look fine. I'll need bearings/bushings & frictions. Can I reuse the steels if they look ok? Frictions are getting replaced because of black dust in the fluid, so I'm thinking I probably should do bands too? What about teflon seals? Anything I'm forgetting? I'm probably not far from a full kit minus pistons at this point

I talked to a local transmission shop yesterday. He said the bushing wear is probably due to a bad engine block ground. Not what I expected, but that ground has given me trouble before so I'll check it again

I talked to another shop & a trans parts wholesaler. Both confirmed the ground wire can cause failures, but it sounds like that causes pitting in the bearings/bushings from electrical arcing. Mine aren't pitted. Also, the multimeter is showing continuity between battery, block, chassis & body so I don't think that's the problem.
