Rear End Leak with 4.10
#1
howdy once again. I haven't started noticing it yet on our pickup, but i know that several used, not heavily as they are 02 year models with only about 30 to 40 thousand miles, trucks with 4.10 rear ends that i have looked at have had oil seapage and damp spots on the rear end. I was just wondering if this has happened to many of yall and if it does, what can be done to fix it, if its just a seal or what. It appears to be a fairly common problem but could just be coincidence i guess. Well thanks for checking this out for me guys.

I have that problem and I have 4.10's..... I have it checked every 10000 miles or so.... The first time it was completly dry and the pinion seal was bad.... Then they replaced that and everything has been good since then... It does seap a little bit though and the drive shaft slings it around so it looks alot worse than it really is....

Long time remedy for this issue is to NOT use the gasket. Clean both surfaces well and apply liberal amounts of rtv black and torque the diff cover. A retorque is usually in order after a good heat cycling .. some 1/4 mile runs or sustained freeway driving.
