Default Rear Axle Questions

Hey guys,
Im want to check out some junk yards for a rear end for my truck. I currently have a 2000 Ex Cab 2wd. I have a open 342 gear now. I need more traction. Id like to find a 373 posi rear. What will work for my truck? Can I use stuff from a hd and have it bolt on? Or does it have to be from a 1500? What codes do i look for to tell what is inside?

The HD's have bigger rears. You would need parts from a new body style truck also. You could also go with 99-up full size van.

BTW, when I was saying full size van, that only applies to the internal parts pf the rear (gears and posi), not complete rears.

Well let me clear up what im looking for. I have a 2000 which is the new body style. I want to buy a complete rear from a junk yard or something that will bolt right in. I dont want just the internals. I wanna remove my rear, bolt in the new one and be done with it.

I have a guy bringing me a 2000 housing so he can rob the 3.73 out of it then he will be leaving the empty one to me. I can build it up for you with any ratio and posi you need. Pm me for more info.

Well let me tell you what i do and you can make a suggestion and give me a price. I have a 2000 Silverado with about 80000 miles. I have borla cat back, MSD Wires, K&N FIPK, Hypertech Programmer and 160 thermostat, and thats pretty mcuh it. I am planning on doing some long tube headers, maybe NOS, and other minor stuff in the future. I am getting new tires soon and they will either be 265/40/22 or 265/35/22. I just want a rear with a posi. This is my daily driver so i dont want to sacrafice milage much or anything like that. I want to maybe get a little more accelleration, and also get a posi. On the dry streeet as it is, i cant launch without spinning like crazy. I wanted to find a rear with posi and such in a junkyard from a 99+ truck and just swap it thinking that will save me some money. Make a suggestion to me and quote me a price shipped to 33064. I dont need brakes and stuff, ill just use the ones on the truck now. Maybe we can work a deal, send me one built and ill send you my stocker as a core.

Thats alot of shipping, I'll see what I get when he drops it off. I know for sure that it has an open differential, it has a 3.73's in it, if I can convince him on letting me get the axle and just buy him a new 3.73 for this housing I'm sure I can build it for less than $750.00 shipped. He also said it doesn't have the backing plates or brakes on it.
p.s. what is the part # on the msd wires you used, I need to change my soon in my 1999 5.3 ls. Oh, also I changed my original locking diff to an Eaton and i can barely get both tires spinning if that helps you in any way. Again just Pm me so I have your name around just in case I loose track of this post. Thanks Scott K.

Cant remember which plug wires i used. I just ordered them from Summit. It could be either of these part numbers i guess. I think when i bought them they were around 60 bucks.MSD-32839 MSD-32829
