Question on tire size front and back 4 wheel drive

Default Question on tire size front and back 4 wheel drive

Guys at work are at it again. How much of a difference in height can the tires front to back on a 4x4, if any without screwing up something on a 4x4.. Thanks I just want to see if me or them is rite

I would think they would need to be the same. I know the gears must be the same.

none, if your are running 4wd, it will put alot of strian onthe system and the tires will skip or something will break. my aunt found this out on her awd jeep

Ok I knew about the gears having to be within 1, but wasn't sure about tire size mattering 1/4 or 1 inch.. Thanks JOHN

a local gear shop claim that even if the same size tire is worn more on the rears than the fronts, it will cause more wear in the transfercase. make sence to me.

if your tires arnt making the exact same rollout distance then what is their to pick up the difference? Ring/pinion, driveshaft, transfer case......

On an offroad tire I can see what wilde is saying, on street tires were tread is like 1/8-1/4" I cant really see it.

On my Zr2, i had 31x10.50s on it, they put on 265/75-15's on the rears by accident. It was the worst feeling thing when I went into 4wd. there was pushing and dragging going on. The difference was less than a half an inch. Stay with the same size for all four.
