Default power steering gear box

hey guys i just bought a 2000 ecsb sierra z71 on 315s, it has a leveling kit and a body lift :/ but anyway it has recently had all the steering stuff replaced except for the gearbox, and pump. It has a good bit of steering slop, i checked it out and it appears to be in the gearbox itself, i know that there is an adjustment on the top side of the pump, but didnt know if anyone had screwed up by doing it themselves read a couple of horror stories on some other forums of going to tight and exploding the pump and losing the steering completely while driving, jsut trying to by some time by tightening it up, so i dont have to buy a new gearbox right now. any input would be appreciated. thanks

I've tightened both of mine up, being conservative with the increments, and all is well. Just takes an Allen wrench and box wrench and go drive around. Just make sure you hold the preload in the Allen while you tighten the locknut that way when you tighten lock it doesn't over tighten Allen beyond your initial adjustment.
Neither of mine were all the horrible to begin with though.

Has anyone found a stronger than stock power steering gear box? Mine has a bunch of slop in it and needs to be replaced.

Are any of the available replacement boxes available with a quicker ratio? I'm building a 96 4wd Tahoe to be more street performance oriented and a quicker ratio box would lessen the lock to lock and make it turn quicker

Found this thread about quick ratio upgrade go to post 15---> https://www.performancetrucks.net/fo...ng-box-408225/

Of course no update on the results but at least it gives some new info for the subject.

As far as adjustment, I go 1/8 turn at a time and take it around the block or over to an open lot with no cars to make the adjustments. Make sure you tighten the lock nut each time.
