Unhappy please help regarding 4l80e. I have been royally screwed over

Hello my name is Jeff. I blew up my transmission and had a guy build one out of his core for me. He seemed to be a reputable tranny shop and gave me one within a week. installed and it would not stay in fourth gear. he supposedly rebuilt it and it is doing the same thing. now he is refusing warranty. but I bought a different one and the truck is working just fine. so, after some research I found out there are two different 4l80e's, one for subrubans and light duty, and one for diesel and 454 3500hd's. I think he sold me the light duty one. how do I prove it? please help, this guy has almost $3000 of my money and I never got a working transmission.

A 4l80e is a 4l80e. Do you mean a 4l85e?

no just 4l80e. I have read a ton of threads about the torque converter mabae being different. but the main reason I ask is if you call a trans shop and ask them to look up the number they have two different part numbers for a suburban say versus my truck 3500 hd.

is the torque converter the only thing different? I guess how would I know if he gave me the wrong torque converter? I have read a ton of stuff saying the afl valve causes this problem as well. if he didn't replace that I guess I will just have to prove in court that he didn't build me a uesable transmissioI hate the idea of having to sue this guy. but he isn't even returning my calls or texts now. and I have to get my money back.

Is it not staying in 4th or is the converter not staying locked in 4th?

The transmission is the same, but the diesels and gassers had different torque converters.

Trans is the same man, like said the converter is different but that is irrelevant to the issue you have. There are some internal differences between years but nothing big. What year is the trans and what year is the vehicle it is going in or was in.

that's the thing is he will not tell me where what or when this transmission came from. but my truck is a 91. so the trans I got used after dealing with this guy for over a month, was out of a 91. is there any way to tell the torque converters apart. mabey that's what he did wrong.

91-93 uses a different pressure control circuit, but once again this is not going to cause it to only have issues with 4th. Regardless of which torque converter it is not going to cause a issue with only 4th, either torque converter will work it is just a difference in stall speeds.
