Default Pinion angle clarification

I measured my pinion angle the other day (I think). The driveshaft was pointing down 4 towards the ground, and the pinion was pointing up 3 towards the body. Would this give me a -1 pinion angle?

My setup is 2" shackles and 2" hangers, with 2 shims fat end forward and the carrier bearing moved up. There is a slight vibration during acceleration. I'm thinking of replacing the current shims with 4 or 6 shims.

Thanks.

Everything you need to know about driveshaft angles

Not sure what you mean by driveshaft. You need to measure on the yoke. I usually put a socket on the ujoint cap and place my angle finder on that. Same with the pinion.

off the top of my head that is a 1* operating angle. pinion angle is the angle of your pinion in comparison to a flat surface (the ground). you have a +3 pinion angle. the operating angle is what angle your u joint is at (using pinion angle and driveshaft angle)

So does the pinion angle (angle with the ground) really matter? Wouldn't the working angle of the driveshaft-to-pinion u-joint be most important from a vibrations perspective?

everyone says that a negative pinion angle is better for traction. i didnt see a difference when going from positive to negative...

If the pinion angle is negative then the working angle of the joint would be pretty bad I'm guessing. If I go with 4* shims then my pinion angle would be +1* and the working angle would be 3*.

for something thats so easy to adjust, its such a PITA to figure out the right way of measuring it and what causes vibrations. I have a vibration around 70 and once I get to 115 I have to let out because my low traction and ABS lights come on and the MPH starts bouncing, I held it once and it snapped my output shaft housing from the vibrations. and after a year of trying to get the right answers I STILL have the vibration and its making me want to sell the truck!!!

sorry I hope you figure it out and have better luck than myself

Ive been told best for traction is -2 to -3. I cant say since I'm confused as to how to measure mine .

someone should do a HOW TO and take pics of every step
