need help???
Ok....
was driving the truck around this morning, and got to my destination...
when I got out of the truck I smell, and see smoke coming out from the driver side rear tire
get the truck back home, and take the wheel, and brakes off, and find that the brake pads, and shoe are covered with a fluid of some kind..
also the inner part of the rim is also covered with this fluid...
I took some brake cleaner, and sprayed off the brake shoe and pads, and cleaned the inside of the wheel..
Put it all back together, and drove it some more tonight.
well I can see that it is leaking and coming from the inner part of the rotor where the hub is...
I am figuring that the seal has gone bad on me in the hub......
My question is..
can I just replace the seal??
or is there more that needs to be done???

Sounds like an axle seal. You have to remove the dif cover, pull the retaining clip on the axle to pull the axle out. And then change the seal, re-assemle ( that's the short version..... lil more detailed when you actually do it. Just follow the book. Rather simple.)

chilton's or haynes, get it at ur local autozone, 14 bucks or so. or pay a mechanic, probably 2 hrs or so to do it. You should do the other side, while you have the dif cover apart, and such. seals are only 2-3 bucks, i think. ( unless these new gm rear ends, have some crazy new setup that i don't know about)

slide the axles out replace both seals, and I should be good to go
oh and replace the rear fluid...

i've never pulled the axles on a g80, if you have one.... so i can't really tell you, but on an open differential, you have to pull the c clips, on the axles. To do so, push the axle in, from the hub end, and remove the clip inside the gear carrier. Then slide the axle out. buy the 14 dollar book, you'll use it all the time for reference for other small jobs like this, wiring diagrams, fluid capacities and types, torque specs, etc...etc...

But make sure it's mineral based oil w/ NO LIMITED SLIP ADDITIVE ADDED and NO SYNTHETIC OIL either. I was told by Pyle Bros. to get the GM additive to put in it. Also this is from Eaton's website :
Don't know how to get to the C-clips on this unit so I can't help you on that...I guess I should have watched a little more closely to see how it's done in case I need to do it in the near future. Let us all know when you get it done...Zed

Ok got the rotors, and Diff. cover off.
fixing to take the C clips out, and romove the axles..
Going to go ahead and do both seals on the axle.
just need to find some Mineral based oil, and the Gm addative,,
I have some Slick 50 gear oil, but not sure if thats the right kind?????
what are you guys using, and where did you get it from???
I have an Eaton posi BTW, and I am following their directions that Zed posted above ..
