Default Is my rearend an 8.5" or 8.6"?

It's a 2000 sierra 1500 with the rear disk brakes. I was under the assumption is was 8.5, but Ron (Ron's maching service) tells me it's an 8.6" and according that the master install kit is slightly different than the 8.5 kit. Can someone confirm this?

Interesting.

Is there any strength difference between the 8.5 and 8.6?

Not sure, I know that some of the 8.5s are 28 spline, and the 8.6s are 30 spline. Or vice versa.

Well I guess I had ordered the incorrect kit (the one for the 8.5) and luckily Ron caught it and sent the right kit.

89 and older was 28 spline.
90-99 8.5 was 30 spline
99+ 8.6 is 30 spline.

8.5/8.6 simply use slightly different bearings. The gears interchange.
