Default mileage with 4.10 gears

well i filled my tank up the other day and reset my tripometer. drove the truck around on the interstate and in town. some easy driving and some hard wot driving. end result is i got 350 miles out of the tank and i had about an 1/8 left in it when i added more fuel.

most of the tank was used today hauling around 4 passengers then myself and a bed full of gear.

so all in all. i think i can easily break 400 with normal driving.

so for anyone worried about killing their mileage this is possibly something you can gauge from. btw, i have a ecsb step side. i don't think that is too bad.

i personally didnt think it was worth it going from 3.73s to 4.10s. i think stock 3.73s is the way to go, plus u dont get the whining from aftermarket gears

i went from 3.42, to 3.73 then on to the 4.10. i have had them in for a while now but decided to record the mileage. i was consistently seeing above 400 a tank with the 3.42. no matter how i drove.

the 3.73 gears are a great all around gear. i will be the first to admit that. however, when i put the cam in i lost some bottom end due to not having a high stall converter. having the 4.10 on the shelf, i decided to throw'em in. they cured the lack of bottom end torque.

a lot of people say the 4.10 and 3.73 are not that much different, i can agree to a certain point.

Thanks. Reason I'm asking, I am putting in an Eaton and while I was in there I was going to swap out the 3.73's for 4.10's....my 3-ton beast is a might bit tough to get moving, and I was thinking that every little bit is going to help. But it isn't cut-and-dried, like if I had 3.42's. If I had 3.42's then going to 4.10's would be a no-brainer.

well, you will notice more umph down low. granted. it won't be as noticble as going from 42's to 10's but i could tell a diff. i suppose it was mainly do to losing some bottom end with the cam install and then getting it back with the 10's. on any given day i can lay waist to my tires. with the 73's i could only do that on certain pavement and with the stock cam in place. after the cam i really couldn't. your cam isn't much larger than mine. i don't see a aftermarket converter in your sig. if you are planning on a converter such as a yank 3000 or equivelant, i would stick with the 3.73. if you want to do 4.10 i wouldn't go higher than a 2800 stall. however that is all relevant to the tires and size you run. if you have a large tire then 10's and a higher stall. smaller tire smaller stall with 10's.

this is my opinion on the matter and i know some might disagree. i am looking at it from the standpoint that if you can't get the power to the ground and planted then what good is it.

sorry for the novel.

Please don't apologize for sharing your experience....I really appreciate it.

I had a helluva launch last night with a friend in the truck. Serious acceleration with 100% traction. This seems to always be the case with my truck, so I'm used to it, but it blew his mind completely. He had all kinds of questions - he didn't get why I wasn't spinning like he does in his Thunderbird. I explained to him about tire width (305mm X 2), positraction/limited slip (G80), coils versus leafs, weight transfer (I have pretty soft springs in the back right now), etc.

I don't have a stall and don't plan on getting one. But shortly I will be swapping in a 4L65E, which, with the converter it's equipped with, should stall a couple hundred RPM's higher than the 1600 I'm getting out of the stock 4L60E. So I'll likely be flash/brake stalling to 1800-1900 RPM's. My tires are 305/50-20's, which are 31.6" in diameter. Right now, at 70 MPH, I am running about 1900 RPM's.

I don't have a problem with low-end grunt. I had my cam made for my application, which at the time took the stock stall into consideration. I have an extremely even powerband starting right at the 700 RPM idle, running all the way through redline. That's what happened last night - facing a busy intersection, I just let off the brake and nailed the gas....instant acceleration, shitloads of torque, zero wheelspin. This is why I'm thinking I could do 4.10's and get away with it.

Naked AV, if you aren't spinning with the gears you have now then you could probably get away with 4.10 and not have spinning issues. If you do the swap yourself you can always go back if you don't like the 4.10's and just be out some time and gear oil and such.

Bluecajun, that is good mileage. I don't think i ever got that kind of mileage when i had 3.42's in cause i can't keep my foot out of the gas. when i am on the Istate, i run at 80 mph most of the time. I know i can get above the 400 mark easily. either way, i am happy with the mileage my truck gets. i Know it is better than dodges. lol
