Default Lowering

Is it wrong to lower a 4X4

I want my '10 Z71 to sit level, and I don't want the huge gap that it will leave. Nor do I want to put it on 35's.

I want Caddy 22's and full wheel wells, with stock size Caddy tires.

Thoughts, recommendations?

I love my lowered 4x4, actually want to make it AWD. I did the poor man's drop on mine...lowering keys, removed rear lift blocks, and installed 2" drop shackles. If I ever get the dough I'd like to get lowering control arms up front and hangers for the rear. The 07+ trucks sit even higher than the previous generation, so I'm not exactly sure what all would be involved to get them lower...different front suspension too. A lot of guys go with spindles up front and swear by them, there are also lowering leaf springs available. I'd think that in your case I'd probably do rear shackles and hangers, remove lift blocks, front spindles or lower control arms, and possibly front coil springs (the 07+ 4x4's have coils up front correct?) Do some searching of this section, I'm sure that someone around here has lowered a GMT900 4x4

Yeah, the NNBS trucks are strut front, and the same rear setup as a 1973 apparently, according to Beltech...so at least the same as yours.

I have done a couple quick searches on beltech and ground force, and they make 2/4 drops and 3/5 drops for my truck. I just have to talk to a few guys to see quality of kits etc. I really like the stuffed wheel well look, But I kinda want it to handle better too. Maybe a 3/5 and a sway bar kit.

I know the 5/7 kit is too low for what I'm after, and it's a flip kit with c-notch anyway....not getting that involved.

Good to know I'm not alone in wanting to lower my 4X4. You guys think it would be a good idea to get rid of the Z71 badge if I do the lowering job. I kinda want to anyway...even if I did keep it stock height.

Something like this out back and running down to end of the cab or maybe a little past

I have 4 link so I changed the spring and put shock extensions to actually squat the rear a bit to hook up better. The front is obviously the real issue though as you deal wiith spindles and control arms to lower it that much. Ive heard all kinds of good and bad regarding the parts for this - the spindles apperently dont hold up that well, and you dont have too many options, but Ive only read that a few times and no first hand knowledge. I opted to spend money on handling and did the sways, shocks, springs and nice set of tires. It hooks up pretty nice now for some great aggressive driving on twisty mtn roads!

Ground force, mcgauphys, and belltech all make good drop kits.
Search for a member named fake_USA he has a lowered 08 silverado 4x4, it has a 4/7 drop.

I was looking at McG's...they seem best priced VS. Quality. Its either Belltech McG's or Ground force, those seem to be best in quality and what most guys are running.

I'm looking around to see if I can scrounge used parts at a bargain before I bite the bullet and just buy new.

I do hear about guys talking about a spring relocator (front??)...the kit from McG doesn't come with one. Can someone shed light on this....is it an alignment thing? Or is it just a shackle flip to put the 2wd shackle out back

I'm looking at 2" spindles front and 4" springs in the back. I will toss 1" coils and pull the factory lift block if its not low enough or level as required.

Thanks I will contact this guy and see what he has to say.

the coil relocators are just a new perch for the springs to sit on. it replaces the oem perch and the new one lowers it up to 2". its for the front.

No it's not. I think it's wrong to NOT lower a truck! These GMT 900s sit way too high, I think. Around where I live, every little jackass has a ten inch lift and 35 inch tires on his truck, and they don't stand out at all. I mean, to each his own, but I'd rather be able to step into my truck without doing a one armed chinup on the steering wheel, and be able to squeeze out a bit better mileage doesn't hurt either. Here's my thread, I just finished lowering my 4x4 the other day. I've got an extra inch of room to go down in the back, and I'm gonna take it.

I've got some brand new Bell Tech drop shackles for the rear that'll be up for sale soon. Search for the username SSLSX427, he's close to you and sold me brand new lowering parts for way cheaper than I could have bought anywhere myself. Also, ssierra08 in Texas always seems to have some great deals on drop parts. Good luck, you'll be a standout on the island from all those F250s on Rockstars.

Tell me about it man. Slammed S-10's or lifted 4X4 with 35's + That's all I see every day. You must stand out pretty good out there in the flat lands too hey...

Thanks for the info again guys.
At least I know I am not totally crazy for wanting to do this. I mean when am I ever going to take a $50K truck off road....logging trails maybe, You can drive a car down these roads and not get dirty, but serious stuff requires a solid axle....not to mention all the serious trails here are just wide enough for a jeep...and even than some don't fit if they have bigger than 33's
