Default Did I lose 2nd gear?

'02 Silverado 4.3L 4L60 ~80k

I'm worried to drive the truck around anymore but I think it's lost 2nd gear. It's winding high out of 1st and into 3rd and then from 3rd to 1st on the way back down. With the truck at idle you can hear a whining/humming noise and it whines down as you shut the engine off. You can also smell hotness or burning.

What exactly happened here? Should I repair, replace upgrade? Only 2 problems, no money and only transportation.

I have a vette style servo but never got around to installing it.

I haven't smelled it yet. Initially the engine revved high from first and it slammed into 3rd. After that I went about 2 miles back home on it never going over 30 mph.

If it turns out I'll need to replace the transmission I might as well upgrade. But don't know the cost differences in any of my options as of yet.

Ok, the fluid doesn't smell burnt to me... but like I said I only drove about 2 miles after the initial signs of trouble.

The truck will manually go into any gear except reverse. No reverse! Whats my problem guys?

I don't have remote start. Never have. I was told on another forum it may be the sun gear. Who can give me more information on this? I know it's like a $50 part, but with labor and rebuild it might as well be a new transmission.

If you do not have 2nd, 4th or reverse you have a broken or stripped out sun shell. Vince

I don't have reverse, but I do have second when shifted into second manually on the column. Never went fast enough to get it to 4th. Still the sun shell? What kind of deal can you get me on a built 60 or 65 Vince?

You could verify if you still have forth but from what you are describing to me it sounds like the shell. Might do more damage to the unit by doing this. Just a warning. When you say that you still have second when you put it into manual second, are you shifting from manual 1st to second or from 3rd to 2nd?

When shifting from 1st to 2nd manually, 2nd still works. Reverse doesn't. I still don't have the ***** to go find out if I have 4th.
