Default locking diff

most gm trucks come with a locking Differential my question is how do you lock it or when does it lock... and is there a way we can make positive without having to spend 500 dollars... on a limited slip...eaton...

i always believe i lock mine by backing up on to the stageing lights then droping to 1st but this takes up to much time and if i dont do this i spin my tires and cant hook.. any advice would be good....

The stock G80 Locking dif. AKA Eaton Gov loc locks when thee axles speeds are 100 rpm different. The dif wont lock at speeds over 30 mph, this avoids the tendency of the truck to want to go straight when taking gentle bends on the freeway. The stock locking rear cant be "locked" using the method you describe, there must be a rpm difference as the "locker" is engaged by centrifugal force.

I had a Powertrax lockrite and it wanted to go staright on the freeway. I hated that locker, I broke 3 of them, just brutal.

You can spend $400 on a Detroit Truetrac. I would go Truetrac over even an Eaton Carbon.

Scroll down this link and you will see a pic of the Detroit Truetrac, it is might beefy. The pics are from a 10 bolt 8.5" dif.

It sounds like you might want a Detroit Locker, whatever you do avoid Powertrax no slip or Powertrax lock rite, they say there is no parts to waer, but that is just crap, its a straight up blatant lie. There are metal cogged wheels that ride on one another during a shrp corner, it doenst take long to wear out. I tried to save some money up front but the excessive driveline slop ate away my axle splines, wreacked havoc with my ABS and made loud noises when cornering. The worsty was when turning sharp to enter a parking spot, it sounded like the rearend was actually breaking pinion or ring gear teeth, never again.

here is a good post with a bunch of different traction aids ie: lockers and posi's, posted by my friend PSWired, I am also Hog on that forum.

I have been doing alot of reading on the posi's and the one that has the best recommendations is "Detroit Trutrac"..... the Eaton is well known too, but I have made my choice and I am going with the Detroit Trutrac....

As far as I know, unless you are driving a rail car or a funny car, ypu can not do a burn out past the start line and back up into the lights. AMybe your track is different, according to the NHRA rulebook, only a few PRO classes are allowed to be beyond teh starting line before the start of their run.

If you burnout past te starting line on a race day, by the rules, you just lost that race, it equivalent to redlighting.

I could see that if you are laying down hot rubber right at the start line by doing a John force style burnout past the starting line, then by backing up and laynching on your own hot rubber, that would be an advantage for sure. As soon as you let off the power duringa burn out, the stock G80 Govlock unlocks. It only locks when there is a 100 rpm differentail beteen the 2 axles, and only below 30 mph. You pulling forward or backwards afre a burnout dosent matter in regards to locking dif operation in a stock Govlock locking dif.
I have seen othertrucks running a G80 have the passenger side tire stop spinning during a burnout, either it is worn out, or the centrigugal weight is kicking out(over 30 mph) thus unlocking the dif. The G80 GOVLOK unlocks over 30 mph, to allow for tire differentiation when taking slow gentle curves on the freeway. If you run a true locker, or have teh spider gears welded, you can actually feel the truck wanting to go staright in the curves, or it is fighting your steering inputs.

I see, that wouldnt fly at the tracks around here. You are not allowed past the beams unless you are a rail or funny car or Pro mod, pretty much if you arent a pro-class, you MUST stay behind the lights. If you do it accidentally fine, the officials arent that sticky, but I have seen drivers booted for not obeying that rule.
