Default KENT MOORE TOOLS J TOOLS NEEDED 4l80E REBUILD

I'm curious which of the Kent Moore j tools are absolutely needed for a 4l80e rebuild. these bastards are so expensive it's ridiculous. I know some of these, like the j-8763-02 case holder tool, aren't really necessary. Here is a list of tools from the ATSG manual.

j-8763-02 case holder tool
j-38655
j-38789 pump removal tool
j-38358-a forward clutch housing tool
j-38733 direct clutch housing tool
j-38868 main shaft
j-21363 lip seal protector
j-38735-2 re sizer tool
j-35138
j-38729
j-8001
j-38736-2 solid seal installer
j-38736-4 sizer
j-38736-5
j-38736-3
j-38736-1
j-25025-1
j-21368 alignment band
j-38739
j-38693
j-38737
j-21370-10 gauge pin
j-26700-13 dial indicator base magnet
j-23327-1
j-25018-a
j-21362 lip seal protector
j-21409 lip seal protector
j-8001
j-23093
j-38733
j-38732
j-38731-3 spacer
j-38731-2 seal protector
j-38731-1 seal protector

Also is there an alternative tool maker that is cheaper?
Thanks guys

Probally the Seal installer and resizer tools are all you really need.

Ebay FTW on those things... Some of them are even New at 1/2 the price. Let me look it all up and i will see If i can put a list together of the things that would be most helpfull.

Maybe some of the builders will throw there 2 cents in.

I know Just enough to get my self introuble...

BTW FWIW GM had 4L80E Service tool kit. This came in a blue crate and came with the main hand tool's to rebuild a 4L80E. I have seen them go for as much as $500 complete on ebay but recently there were 2 kits that sold in the 300-400 range.

You should really only need the OD lip seal installers. If you use bonded pistons in the direct and forward you can install them without any tools.

The newer units use sealing rings made of graphite impregnated composite material and no tools needed for those either.

The turbine shaft sealing rings can be installed using electrical tape for a sizer. Universal tool....

I have home made trans holding fixtures that we use, but if only doing one unit you can get by with something less fancy.

When I bought my service kit I seen one sell for 900 bucks, two weeks later I seen a "buy it now" for 400. I grabbed it....

You will need the apply pin gauge tool as well.

I figured you probally only needed a few small things. Most of the GM techs I talk to say the same thing. Thanks for chiming in.

As far a stands alot of guys make there own. You can get clever with a stack of tire's and or a solid trash can. if you want the GM one, they average $100-150 on ebay if your patient. a couple weeks back about 5 poped up around the same time. One was as cheap as $80 But you will need that little adapter for the side of the case and the base to swing it in. The bases are not as easy to find.
