Isn't the cable supposed to just pop onto the manual shift shaft lever stud?
During my oil change touch and wiggle stuff session, the cable came off the stud with no resistance. When I put it back and squeezed it on with pliers, it did not click into place. The only thing holding the cable onto the stud now is luck.
I looked at pictures of the Dorman replacement part and the stud does not look any different from what I can remember.
What do I need to repair it?

Ok, I saw a video of a guy replacing the cable. It just pops off the manual shift shaft stud. I will invest in a new Dorman lever. Maybe the old one is corroded enough to have the lip on the stud gone.

The old one is corroded enough that the groove is worn away, but that didn't fix it. The cable end is either worn bigger or there's some kind of springy clippy thing missing. I think I will modify the old shift arm to use a small shoulder bolt maybe

I was looking at those but dismissed them because they are labeled for the 4l60. I have since seen a video of a guy installing one of those, but he had to drill the cable end. I thought he had a 4l60 because his truck was 6 lug, so I also dismissed him.
I going to have to do what he did. Since you mentioned it that must be the prescribed repair.
Thanks

I just put my trans back in yesterday so this is fresh in my memory. The cable had a green stepped insert in the molded end of the cable. The lever had a grove in the nib the insert snapped onto. It is possible the cable insert is worn or missing but uncertain if it is a serviceable item. If there is still something substantial there to reduce the diameter of the molded end, your shoulder bolt idea may work.
EDIT: Just looked up the Dorman parts suggested above, looks like this may be your fix. The cable should be the same for 4L60/80.
