easiest way to tell is definitely by the color it should be bright red like stated and there should be writing on the side of the converter in black magic marker stating the stall speed and what series it is but that is probably long gone.

Dave (Yank) uses a red paint that changes color when it has been overheated. Those are heat marks from the converter clutch getting hot. Those aren't that bad, I've seen alot worse than that. But now might be a good time to send it in for a cut & clean, and maybe a new lockup clutch.

Here's what a totally smoked clutch might look like from the outside.

I Would definitely send it!!!

Your only asking for trouble installing a used Performance converter in a performance type application. It doesn't matter how well it worked in the last vehicle. When you see signs of heat its only a matter of time. It could be a week could be a year.

It may need a crank spacer and a flat flexplate. It looks just like mine, Some of the 6 bolt models can also be used to fit in the LT1 cars (without crank spacer) and in LS cars (with a crank spacer) . I'd call Dave and have the converter and a caliper ready, he will be able to tell you what it is.
