How to tell if a converter is still good?
#1
Decided to rebuild te 60e in my 02 instead of doing an 80e swap. I have a yank tt3000 that I want to throw in there. It's been sitting in my room for about 2 years now though. It had some fluid still in it when I bought it from dezzert1500(sp?). I know the truck would benifit more from a 3600 stall with the tr224 cam, but I already have this converter.
Is there any way to tell if this converter is ok after sitting for so long? Or do I have to send it to yank for a cut and clean? Could they bump the stall speed up any, if so how much?

Be best to call them and see what they say..
but if it was working before, it should work now.
but the last 2 times i put a used converter in, the clutchs wouldnt hold.
And both of those were mine and they had worked before i took them out. One was a stock 4L60E TC and the other was a stock 4L80E TC. Both wouldnt hold if i loaded it up in OD.
So if it were me, id call Yank and see if they can just go ahead and C&C it and restall it to what your lookin for.
better to do it the first time

Nonni has some pretty solid advise here. Always better to be safe instead of sorry. One thing to look at the front of the converter to see if there is a burn mark in the area where the converter clutch rides. This would be a dead giveaway that the converter has some damage to the clutch. Just because the converter has been sitting does not mean it could have gone bad from sitting. You could always drain some of the oil out of the converter in a clean pan to see what comes out of it. If you see metal I would stop right there. If you feel like taking a chance on the converter..........its your call!

Thanks for the responses guys. I called them and they said that it wont hurt it at all from sitting and that they couldnt re-stall in any higher. Ill check it out good when I get home to see it. I think ill roll with it as long as the fluid looks good. I just want to get this thing back on the road asap.
