Some of you may remember my 60E "zipper mod" from 3 months ago. Should save me some time removing it again.
Last week I needed to "merge" into traffic on the busy road near home. This time the line of cars was longer than my patience, so I hit the 4x4 button & waited for a small gap in the lineup. I picked my spot & punched it, WOT. 4 wheel drift into the lineup, and I had my spot, just like many times before. Until the transmission needed to shift into 2nd gear. BANG!!! Jolted the whole freaking truck, like hitting the end of a tow chain when you're pulling your drunk buddies out of a mud hole. The engine bounced off the rev limiter a couple times as well. After I finished shitting my pants, I lifted. Transmission shifted and I babied it all the way to work without problems.
I checked the basics and couldn't find anything wrong. It seemed to be working just fine. I've been driving it every day without any trouble. Even did some 1/2 to 3/4 throttle burnouts, just to see if it was gonna explode or not. But it's been just fine.....until tonight.
Same situation on my way home tonight. Too much traffic on the road(Alaskan rush hour), and I got in a hurry. Hit the 4x4 switch, and pedaled out at 3/4 throttle, only a little tire spin. BANG and jolt again at the top of first gear. I lifted before it hit the rev limiter. ****!!
Now it has no 4th gear, and sloppy shifts everywhere, and it's slipping in 2nd I think. Or maybe it's first. I'm not totally sure, but I know it's done. I limped it home, and cracked a beer.

Who the hell is building your transmissions? Ive got a "built" 60e in my truck and dont really expect it to last any length of time. When it croaks Ill be going back to an 80e. Theyre just a much stouter transmission plus they shift awesome.

My previous builder closed his business and now only builds race transmissions on nights & weekends at home. He took a regular job so he could have regular hours, and a benefit package. He's also half-owner of our local drag strip, so he's trying to be a little bit "less busy".
I never had an issue when something broke while he was my builder. We had an agreement that we both wanted to see how far this tranny could go. So every time it broke, I bought the parts, he provided the labor. After the first couple of times we broke stuff, and switched to all billet internals, it would last 8-9 months and work flawlessly the entire time, but the frictions would wear out.
That didn't bother me too much, it's the wearable part. Like brake pads. If your brakes are under-sized for the vehicle, they wear out too fast. That's how I looked at the 3-4 clutch pack.
Now I have a different builder. He came to me recommended by others, including my previous builder. In fact, my first builder used to be this guy's apprentice 20 years ago. So here I am, with a broken 3 month old transmission, that I just paid $1400 for the rebuild(parts and labor this time). He had talked to "some people" and decided to change the strategy of my build. Major changes to the valve body, shift kit, drilling something in a drum, a bunch of crap that I don't understand. But he assured me that this would be the hot ticket, so I paid up and he built it.
It didn't work right from the second I installed it. Trans temps were 20-30* higher than normal, pump pressures skyrocketed, pressure gauge needle fluctuated erratically during shifts, and something inside the transmission "rattled" LOUD during every shift. He pulled it and fixed it for me right away, and it seemed fine. Until last week, and then tonight.
I need to find a 4L80E.

Might wanna top it off and make another pass and see what happens.
That does suck man though. My perfomabuilt has held up well so far about a year but I'm not putting down the power you are. But my plan later on is if and when I do kill this on is to swap it out for a 80 just because they are that much stronger.. I just don't like the gear ration that much.. But the shifts are closer.

Sorry to hear it man
