Default Driveshaft Question

Getting ready to upgrade the driveshaft on my 01 1500 ECSB Z71. Trucks making about 385 pound feet of torque and 400 horsepower at the tire. Should I change to larger U Joints with the new shaft? I’d rather not spend the extra dollars but I can and will if needed.

I don't know what u-joints are in your truck, but I have oem Mechanics 3R series u-joints in my Yukon and at my current power levels I broke an Auburn Pro series LSD unit but u-joints are still holding up just fine.

Not sure of the cup size on the stock joint, if I upgrade I would go with a 1350 series joint. Cost jumps quite a bit buying a new slip yoke and pinion flange to fit the 1350 series joint. I’m thinking the stock joint size will be ok for my power level. I’m running 265/65/18 tires with 4:56 gears so I’m thinking the tires will break loose before I over stress the U joints.

Got the new shaft in. 5” aluminum.125 wall thickness with 1350 spicer forged U Joints . That should be plenty strong and safe.
