Dealer gear swap rediculous... venting
Caution to those who read this, this thread is mainly so I can vent my frustration and maybe get some more info on this subject.
So I bought my used 2011 Silverado 1500 4wd with the 3.08 gear... I know, people said it before I bought it that I wouldn't like it. But I test drove it, it seemed ok and I was going to live with it. I can still live with it but I would rather not if I don't have to.
So I call the dealer to get a quote to swap to 3.73... 1st dealer says $4000 and I'd get 12yr/12k mile warranty but I don't think that would cover the new differential. 2nd dealer said $5500 and I didn't even ask about warranty... $4-6k just for a 4wd gear swap???!!!! Are you kidding?? I read on a "ask the GM tech" forum were a GM tech said it should run around 1500-1800.
So I'm trying to find a 4wd shop in the KC area to see what they quote me and then I'll have to contemplate the loss of warranty. And also see if AREA47 can tune me up for the gear swap...
It's a factory option for god's sake, it's not like I'm building a rock crawler. I found an awesome used truck that I love, except it has 3.08 gears. How dumb.
Vent over, let me know what you think.

I dont know a whole lot about trucks yet, but I do know there is a junkyard close to me that will sell you a whole rear axle with a locking 3.73 in it for like $200.....
I have dont gear/lsd installation on other vehicles in teh past and its not an overly painful or long affair just have to make sure lash is set right. Figure $120/hr for labor and 3.73:1 ring and pinion sets are $160 on summit.

FYI I have my original GM 3.73s from my truck if you want to buy a set. 220 OBO for both sets. plus whatever shipping runs.

The problem is the cost of parts OEM gears through the dealer are like $700 in some cases more!!! The also going to want want to replace the Diff bearings and those are like $50 each. And its not so much the rear but the front. To reset the gears up in a front case is a pain and very time consuming. Not to mention removing the case from the truck to do it. Rear gears can be done in the truck.
Either get good used assemblies from a wrecker or find some one else that can do it for less then the dealer. You can probably shop around and get both Good used assemblies for Less $1000.
