Default Converter Dilemma

I need some input on what you guys would do in my situation.

I recently purchased a 9.5" 2800 "Street edge" Edge Racing converter for my 80e. Soon after the install I noticed I could brake stall it to ~4200 rpms and there is a slight whine at idle in gear/reverse. Andre told me to check the fluid and I did... all was well. He then told me to read the line pressure because he says it sounds like the pump in the trans. (trans is less than a month old at this point and has 1300 miles on it) So I call the tranny guy and he says it's the converter which seems kind of obvious to me too.. I finally put a gauge on it and the line pressure is within spec. So I call andre @ edge back and he still doesn't believe it's the converter but is willing to take it back, cut it open, fix it if there is anything wrong and ship it back to me. Sure that is nice but he is not willing to ship me something to use in the meantime and I can't have my truck down for 2 weeks while the verter is in the mail..

So the question is do you guys think it is worth the effort to put the stock converter back in for two weeks or so and pull it again or should I ask for a refund and go with a PI or Circle-D ect...? and if I go with another converter maybe bump up the stall speed from 2800 since riding around with a loose 4kstall isn't so bad?

I'd go with something proven. if that 2800 is hitten 4k. then the builder underestimates the power of these trucks

I've heard alot of good stuff about those edge converters. I'm not sure why that converter is acting up.

chit happens and when you play with performance you should be prepared to expect a few problems...trust me, i've had my share. Send the converter back for repair and just deal with it.

I'd get a bulletproof circle D converter for that 4l80e myself (oh wait, thats what I plan on doing lol)....I'm pretty sure that edge converter isn't billet (correct me if I am wrong). Also, I've read that Andre can come off as quite stubborn and arrogant on the phone if you disagree with him.

I've spoken with Andre numerous times and he has been more than willing to help, I know his CS is second to none... He spent over an hour on the phone with me explaining in detail how he builds a converter and how he sets certain things up for certain combos, the guy knows what he's doing.

He's offering to fix it for no cost, I fail to see the problem. Is this your DD? Do you have to have it on the road like right now? I'd slap the stocker in there, have him fix it for free then swap it back in and be along your way, for what he charges for a custom built converter, and then him offering to change it for free, you can't really complain... Its the nature of the game dealing with this stuff.

Yes the truck is my DD and it has to be on the road now. It has a welding machine in the back of it half the time that I use for work. I guess it's just hard to justify doing the swap 2 more times. How much money would I be out if I was having a shop do the labor for me instead of doing it myself you know?

I don't doubt his abilities and his initial CS but after mentioning the possibility his converter might be the culprit he wasn't so nice on the phone. I forgot to mention above that I purchased a cooler when I ordered the converter as well. I give it 2 weeks and no cooler... call and he says he shipped it but will personally ship another... yea right. 2 or three more weeks go by still no cooler. call again and he says he shipped it but will ship another just to make sure, that time I got it 3 days later.. Not saying he was lying but it sounds like bs to me.

I was told $450 to install a converter, but that's also the same guy that did my gears and trutrac for $250, so he is very reasonable on the price.

If you are really using your truck as a work truck and your income depends on it, I'd put the stock 80e stall back in and call it a day. Like Trever mentioned, anytime you add anything performance related it can and will fail on you at any given moment.

I went with an Edge Racing converter because I also have one in the Hemi and it ran flawlessly. The one in my Silverado is a 2600-2800 stall but I can't take it that high because it starts spinning the tire(yes tire as in peg leg, lol). Now that I have a TorqueLok I will try and see if I can go that high.

Can we get a video clip of that whining noise? High stall converters are known to make a little whining noise anyhow. It may be more normal than you think. Just a thought.
