Alot of times on my 04 the computer would take over and shift for me even while i would hold it in first.....so you might be able to but at certain speeds/throttle postion/rpms the computer will take over and shift it anyway.

"Mostly part throttle upshifting, and driving in 1st gear in the city traffic."

EXAMPLE: everyday driving
1st gear, half throttle until 4000rpm, pull it into 2nd, half throttle until 3000 rpm, pull it into 3rd.

EXAMPLE: city traffic
1st gear, accelerate as traffic speeds up, let off and engine brake as traffic slows down. max rpm: about 3500

Tow/haul is ok, but not really what I want it to do.

The truck will not go to 1st gear when the shifter is in 2nd.

It won't shift from 1 to 2 when it's in 1 until about 4500rpm at part throttle.

So tell me,
Will this type of driving hurt the tranny?

It will eventually yes.
Not because its real harsh or anything like that but because its goin to cause excessive heat to build up in the tranny and end toasting clutch bands etc.
If you put a big tranny cooler on it then should be ok...but to do this often i would suggest something around a 34,000-36,000BUI unit at least.Maybe add an external inline filter to allow for an extra quart or so in the tranny line a well for cooler temps.

It is not good to have forward and reverse clutches applied at the same time. You will wear out the tranny faster this way. Just let the auto do it's job. If you really want your part throttle shifts to act like that, have the shift points in the tune changed.

if you want to treat it like that just have your tune changed...whats keeping you from doing the T56 swap?

I've got the stock cooler.
I am thinking about getting a tranny temp guage.
I just wish it was in the dash stock.
but then, the stock guage isn't the best...

I've got a tune, but I want real control of it when I want control of it.
Can you do a T56 with 4x4?

interesting, t56 stuff, maybe after I get 3000 miles on it! LOL

I definately would have bought a stick if it came with all the slt stuff.

I would like to hear more about the forward and reverse clutches and how all of this works.
during regular driving, you can feel the tranny downshifting as you slow down, and you can hit the gas at any time to accelerate. How is the tranny acting different when not using the brakes?

If you want full control at any time you deem it need be...get a TransGo HD2 shift kit.You can control it with a little less heat build up as it will shift faster and help create less heat from the slipping clutches.Plus it will help with overall life of the tranny in general.
