Question Calling all Transmission Pros

I have heard from several people that on any anything with at least 350rwhp and above with any automatic tranny that it is a big no-no to hammer down while in overdrive. They say to drop it into 3rd gear and then hammer down. To the people here that know trannys is there any truth to this? Will dropping to 3rd increase the life span of a tranny or is this just talk? Does it really make in difference?

thats gotta be coming from an oldschool guy that was used to the 3speeds no overdrive and then overdrives came out he didnt want to change. not saying you are one but you probably heard that from an older guy, right?

no it wont hurt it i do it all the time on a 160kmile stock 60e, mind you i dont have near 350rwhp but i also know of others that have 350rwhp+++ and they do it too. on the 60e's it just drops down to whatever gera it should be in, 2nd and whatnot.

they expect you to drop it into 3rd before you pass someone on the highway/interstate????

nonnieselman, most of the time it does drop to 3rd but if the converter is locked in it won't so it may cause more stress on the overdrive gears-

nightrunner, well i'm 30 and the guy that told me is 36 but the guy that told him-age unknown

on my truck if your cruising at 85 running the throttle(no cruise) i can slowy go to 50% throttle from say 30% and then floor it and it would down shift.
