Here's the old thread:

My Vig's are both 10.5".

Here are a couple of shots of the brand new one for my 80E.

I've got an idea for a sponsor to run with, hell I'll even do the CAD design for it. After looking at the 4L80E converter pic posted (looks like it just has two flat areas that engage the pump rotor) I figure the 4L60E pump rotor could be re-designed with flats or a hex for engagement and get rid of that crappy slot design. Then the converter manufacturers could create converter drive snouts based on that standard. Should be pretty painless as it seems companies like P.I., Yank, etc. create their own drive snouts. No more cuts in the snout, no more broken converter drives, and equally distributed torque around the circumfrence of the pump rotor. Should be a win win for the converter and transmission.

Just one less thing for me to worry about now that I'm 80E.... but I did go out and inspect the 60E Vig I have to be sure its okay and it is. No cracks. Looks fine. Maybe 15K miles on it and no spacers.

Hopefully this is not a depth issue as this was resolved through a discussion on here at the time of my install. According to PI's online install guidelines at the time, spacers would have been required, but PI confirmed that no spacers should be used. Don't know if their online instructions were ever revised. I know that I had checked back a while later and they were still the same.
My FP to converter space was just within their "guidelines" so I did not use spacers. I think PI was concerned that people would use just any old washer and not have the exact thickness checked (mic'd) which would most likely cause vibration and misalignment. I haven't called them to verify if they now suggest spacers or not.

Did you discuss this with the techs at PI? What was their final response on using spacers?

This was discussed with Chuck at FLT who discussed it with PI. Based on the fact that the Vig and the stock converter are identical in height(from pads on mounting ears to end of hub) it was decided that no spacers shopuld be used. I just re-measured both and they are identical. I would think that adding spacers would be risking pump damage.

I had a Fuddle HPTruck do the same thing back when I had the 65. When mine broke it took out the pump too. No one could tell me which broke first though, the pump or the converter hub.

ive seen other p.i.'s that have done this too. both the 9.5 and 10.5 . i also thought it may be a spacer issue but mine was within the specs and i called p.i. and they said i shouldnt have used spacers. my converter did this twice before i gave up on p.i. i sold the converter right after i got it back the 2nd time and i beleive it just happened to guy that bought it.

i went to a tcs and after a good amount of miles no isses with that . but they are using a either billet or heat treated hub.
