Default backing plates!?

Just a quick question... Do you need them or not? Im about to take the rusted ones off... Do I need it?

Yes you need them. They hold the parking brake shoes and hardware in place.

It's a little confusing, GM actuallys calls what most people refer as a dust shield the "backing plate". So if that's what you're talking about then no, you don't absolutely need it. FYI, they make aftermarket replacements now that are two piece so you don't have to pull the axles to replace them.

Ya, I just did a disc to drum swap and when I was looking for parts it looked like most all the manufacturers that made aftermarket replacements also made the two piece. Dorman, like AK said and also Napa I believe.
